It’s everywhere these days.

“CBD” is the new rage. It’s online, it’s in stores, it’s in coffee shops…and will be everywhere else soon. But, what is it and does it really work?

With such an important new “miracle plant,” we wanted to dig deep into the myths and truths about CBD, so that you know what it is and what it does. Over the next few days, we’ll take you through it all – the good and the bad. Let’s get started:

What is CBD? And is it Legal?

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is a compound that comes from the cannabis plant and has significant medical benefits. It is not addictive and does NOT make people feel “high” or “stoned,” as it has no to miniscule amounts of THC.

CBD comes from one of two types of the cannabis plant: either marijuana or hemp. These are two different strains of the same type of plant, but like, say, oranges and grapefruit, they are different.

Marijuana contains a lot of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is what makes people feel ‘high.’ While marijuana is now legal in many US states and all of Canada, it is not legal in all US states. Hemp, on the other hand, has less than a third of 1% of THC. It’s 100% legal in the US after the passage of the 2018 US Farm Bill, which defines hemp as “cannabis with less than 0.3% THC” and removed hemp from the list of controlled substances in the US.

CBD oil can be made from either plant. For it to remain legal federally in the US, though, CBD must come from hemp plants. If it does, it’s completely legal. So, if you, like most of our readers, don’t want a “high,” and want to take advantage of all of the health benefits of CBD – stick to hemp-based CBD. (On any label, it should indicate if the CBD is hemp-derived. It if doesn’t mention hemp, best to stay away from it.)

What will CBD do for me? Why is everyone suddenly using it?

Many are calling CBD a natural ‘miracle extract’ The main uses of CBD are:

  • Soothing or eliminating pain and inflammation
  • Helping people sleep better than they have in years
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Helping with skin issues
  • Relieving some neurological conditions
  • ..and more treatments are being discovered every day.

The #1 issue most people use CBD for is reducing pain. However, if you’re taking it wrong, it may not work. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s article on what you need to do for it to work!
